MIAMI — A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk aircrew medevac a 74-year-old man from a cruise ship 15 nautical miles east of Cat Island, Bahamas, Monday.
A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60T Jayhawk Medium-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew forward deployed in Grand Inagua, Bahamas, was launched. Once on the scene the MRR Helicopter crew deployed the rescue swimmer, hoisted the man and headed to land to transfer him to emergency medical services (EMS) personnel awaiting in Nassau, Bahamas Monday evening.
Coast Guard 7th District watchstanders received a medical evacuation request from the cruise ship Marello Discovery, at approximately 5 p.m., stating one of their passengers was reportedly suffering from a stroke and needed higher level medical care.
U.S. Coast Guard watchstanders consulted with a duty flight surgeon, who recommended the medevac.
“Good communication between the cruise ship, and the MH-60T Jayhawk aircrew, and the U.S. and Bahamas emergency operation centers ensured smooth coordination for the
medevac,” said Lt. Cmdr. Matt Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer to the Bahamas. “This medevac was an excellent display of our crews exceptional capabilities to save lives at sea.»
The man was last reported in stable condition.
