CHARLESTON, S.C. — A Coast Guard response boat crew and an MH-65E Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew rescue an injured sailor (male) from his sailboat near Sapelo Sound, Georgia. Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders received a report via VHF-FM channel 16 at 5:23 p.m. from the operator of the Quicksilver, a 36-foot sailboat, stating his vessel ran aground near Sapelo Sound and was taking on water.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Brunswick boatcrew and a Coast Guard Air Station Savannah rescue helicopter aircrew to assist. Commercial salvage also responded to the scene.

Commercial salvage arrived on scene and began preparing the sailboat for a tow. While attempting to recover the sailboat’s anchor, the man aboard the grounded sailboat sustained a severe injury to his hand.
