USCG rescue swimmer receives Distinguished Flying Cross Award
The USCG rescue swimmer Spencer Manson received the Distinguished Flying Cross Award during a ceremony at Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay.
Opening remarks are given at a ceremony at Coast Guard Sector / Air Station Humboldt Bay, tuesday, December 12, 2023 commemorating AST2 Manson’s actions during a rescue operation.
Manson’s efforts during a rescue operation on June 19, 2021, which occurred 70 nm offshore from the California–Oregon border, resulted in all six persons lives aboard a disabled 79-foot schooner being saved.

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — The USCG rescue swimmer Spencer T. Manson received the Distinguished Flying Cross Award at Coast Guard Sector / Air Station Humboldt Bay. Tuesday morning, December 12, 2023.

The Coast Guard Aviation Survival Technician 2nd Class Manson received the award for his heroic efforts during a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter search and rescue mission on June 19, 2021.

This search and rescue mission took place 70 nautical miles offshore the coast of the California-Oregon border. During the SAR operation, Mason and his aircrew rescued six sailors who were on board a sailboat (schooner) disabled 79 foot.

The prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross Award is the highest honor that can be achieved in aviation and is awarded to any Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard personnel who distinguish themselves for heroism or outstanding achievement while participating in aerial flight.
