HOUSTON — Two Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrews rescue eight boaters whose vessel began taking on water 40 nautical miles off Galveston, Texas. Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston command center watchstanders received a call via VHF-FM channel 16 at 4:36 p.m. from a person aboard a 48-foot pleasure craft stating the boat was taking on water with eight adults aboard.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast (UMIB) and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew and a Coast Guard Station Galveston 45-foot Response Boat–Medium crew.

Once on scene, the aircrew of a first MH-65 Dolphin SRR Helicopter deployed the rescue swimmer and hoisted a part of the persons in distress. Minutes later, a second MH-65 Dolphin aircrew completed the rescue mission hoisting the remaining boaters. The eight rescued were transported to Scholes International Airport, Galveston, aboard the two Coast Guard rescue helicopters.

Weather conditions at the time of the rescues were 30 knot winds and 8-foot seas.

No injuries were reported.

Weather conditions at the time of the rescues were 34 mph winds and 8-foot seas.

The boat’s owner will arrange for the vessel’s salvage.
