JACKSONVILLE, Fla — A Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin aircrew medevac a fisherman 24 nautical miles offshore Sapelo Sound, Georgia. Friday, August 11, 2023.
Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders received a medevac request at 11:23 p.m. Thursday, from the operator of the Lady Diane, a 33-foot fishing vessel, stating a crew member was experiencing severe abdominal pain. Watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medical evacuation.
Watchstanders diverted a Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew training in the area to conduct the medevac.
After arriving on scene, the rescue helicopter crew requested the man don a life jacket and enter the water to be hoisted. Environmental hazards made hoist operations from the vessel unsafe.
The MH-65 Dolphin SRR helicopter aircrew hoisted the man from the water, recovered the rescue swimmer and transferred the ailing man to emergency medical services (EMS) personnel awaiting at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah.
The man was last reported to be in stable condition.
