The search and rescue exercise, which simulated the crash of a commuter plane on Little Traverse Bay, drew more than 100 first responders and U.S. Coast Guard members from all over northern Michigan.

CLEVELAND — A U.S. Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk rescue helicopter aircrew conducted the medevac (medical evacuation) of a 55-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man from Isle Royale, Lake Michigan, the past Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The rescued man and woman required higher-level medical attention.
Local emergency services contacted with U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes watchstanders at 10:53 a.m., notifying them that two people needed an urgent medical evacuation from Isle Royale, on Lake Michigan.
The Coast Guard Sector Northen Great Lakes inmediately launched a Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City MH-60T Jayhawk Medium-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew. The rescue helicopter aircrew arrived on scene at 2:05 p.m. and transported the man and woman aboard the MH-60T Jayhawk MRR Helicopter to Marquette, Michigan, where awaiting local emergency medical services (EMS) personnel transrerred them to a higher level of care.
