NEW YORK — A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60T Jayhawk aircrew conducted the rescue of four boaters from a disabled 42-foot motor yacht adrift 3 nautical miles southwest of Moriches Inlet, New York. Saturday night, April 4, 2026.
No injuries were reported.
At 5:45 p.m. on April 4, 2026, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound received a report via VHF that the vessel Proudfoot was disabled and beset by weather in over 12-foot seas. It was reported that local police and responders were unable to assist due to hazardous weather conditions.
Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) and launched a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock. The boat crew later returned to the Station due to the degrading sea state.
The four mariners (two males and two females) were safely recovered and transported to Gabreski Airport for evaluation by emergency medical services (EMS) with no injuries reported. U.S. Coast Guard video.

The Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60T Jayhawk Medium-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew arrived on scene at 8:30 p.m., deployed the rescue swimmer and hoisted all four individuals, two males and two females, using a rescue basket. Once aboard, the MH-60 Jayhawk MRR Helicopter aircrew headed to land to transfer the boaters to the awaiting emergency medical services (EMS) at Gabreski Airport.
“The challenging nature of this rescue underscored the importance of reliable forms of communication and required safety equipment, including life jackets,” said Coast Guard Lt. Jonathan Roth, member at Sector Long Island Sound. “These are instrumental in getting the mariner to safety and are a must-have on any voyage, any time of year and in all weather.”
It was reported that the vessel Proudfoot washed ashore this morning at Democrat Point, Fire Island, New York. New York DEC and local police were on scene and reported that the boat remains intact with no risk of pollution. The owner has contracted a commercial salvage company to recover the vessel pending improved weather and safety conditions.
