HONOLULU – A Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point MH-65E Dolphin helicopter aircrew conducted the medevac of a mariner from a cargo ship 85 nautical miles offshore Oahu. Saturday, July 19, 2025.
Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu (JRCC) watchstanders received a phone call at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday from Eastaway Ship Management about an injured crew member aboard their 892-foot, Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ea Chara, which was approximately 1,000 nautical miles northeast of Oahu. The mariner, a 41-year-old man, had reportedly suffered a fracture to his arm and a possible head injury.
After conferring with the duty flight surgeon, who inmediately recommended a medevac, watchstanders established regular communications with the vessel’s crew to monitor the patient’s status as the Ea Chara proceeded toward Oahu.
At 7:20 p.m. Saturday, an MH-65E Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point deployed the rescue swimmer, successfully hoisted the patient and transported him to Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay. Honolulu Fire Department emergency medical services (EMS) transferred the patient to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for further care.
He was reportedly in stable condition.
