DETROIT – A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew rescue one kayaker from the base of a cliff after their kayak capsized offshore near Shores Beach, Erie, Pennsylvania. Sunday, September 3, 2023.
Coast Guard Air Station Detroit received a call from U.S. Coast Guard Sector Buffalo of a person who fell off their kayak and was pushed onto the cliffs in Lake Erie. A Coast Guard Air Station Detroit MH-65 Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew was launched to assist.
The MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew was able to lower the rescue swimmer to the edge of the cliffs where first responders had placed the person in a litter. The SRR helicopter aircrew hoisted them in the litter from 150 feet over the cliffs.
“As always, this rescue was a team effort. We are extremely grateful for the coordination by Coast Guard Sector Buffalo and Coast Guard Station Erie as well as the incredible work of the Fuller Hose Fire Department zodiac-boat crew and line crew who provided initial care and assistance in evacuating the patient.” Said Lt. Keith Kraker, Coast Guard helicopter Aircraft Commander.
The MH-65 Dolphin aircrew brought the survivor to UPMC Hamot hospital where they were reported to be medically stable.
