HOUSTON — A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin rescue two boaters aboard a disabled aground vessel near Galveston, Texas. Saturday, October 28, 2023.
Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a phone call from the operator of a 21-foot cuddy cabin at 6:42 p.m. stating his vessel was disabled and had run aground on the North Jetty.
Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of a 45-foot Response Boat–Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Galveston and a Coast Guard MH-65E Dolphin Short-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew from Air Station Houston.
When the MH-65 Dolphin SRR helicopter crew arrived on scene deployed the rescue swimmer, hoisted the two boaters and transported them to Scholes International Airport in Galveston. On-scene weather conditions were approximately 4-foot seas with winds of 13-20 mph.
No injuries were reported; the vessel’s owner will reportedly arrange for its salvage.
“Being aware of your surroundings is key,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Tahiem Roach, operations unit controller, Sector Houston-Galveston. “Before you go out, consider the tidal conditions and familiarize yourself with any possible hazards in the vicinity.”
