A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Air Station Cape Cod conducted the rescue of a sailor from the disabled sailing vessel PORTO approximately 255 nautical miles southeast of Chatham, Massachusetts, November 21, 2024.
The Coast Guard Northeast District watchstanders launched an Air Station Cape Cod MH-60T Jayhawk Medium-Range Recovery Helicopter aircrew and an HC-144B Ocean Sentry aircraft aircrew after the sailing vessel PORTO reported loss of rudder control and engine while carrying no survival gear and only a handheld VHF radio for communication.
The crew of the nearby sailing vessel Life of Reily III remained on scene and maintained contact with the mariner until Coast Guard aircrews arrived.
Once on the scene, the MH-60T Jayhawk MRR Helicopter aircrew deployed the rescue swimmer, safely hoisted the sailor and headed to land to transport him to Hyannis Regional Airport.
The Coast Guard deployed the aircrews of an MH-60T Jayhawk to perform the rescue and an HC-144B Ocean Sentry aircraft to maintain communications.
